Fact one: It works like this, from almost every travel company in Xian (except us) drivers and guides will receive a commission from these shops whether you buy something or not. That is to say the shops basically pay for you to come and visit them.

Fact two: Products in these shops are generally more expensive than you will find in local shops.

Fact one: The factories can actually be extremely interesting especially if you have children. For example at the Terracotta Warriors factory not only will they show you how the warriors are made, they will let your kids make some for themselves. Some also consider watching the silk worms at the silk factory a fascinating experience

Fact two: The shops in essence subsidize your trip so they should be cheaper (although be aware some travel companies will simply add an extra couple of items to your itinerary to make it sound more impressive).

Fact three: It can be an excellent and fun way to practice your bargaining skills
