Xian Museums Overview

Tips

The Shaanxi History Museum is now free entrance however you need to remember to take your ID card or passport in order to get a ticket. We advise getting there early and avoid visiting on public holidays and weekends if possible, otherwise be prepared to queue for a while - it is a popular place with locals and rightly so. It is possible to pay to purchase a ticket if you do not want to spend time standing in a queue. There is a limit of 4000 visitors each day. Inside you may want to consider hiring a guide or getting the headset as most of the lengthy exhibit explainations are in Chinese language only.

The Exhibits

Banpo Museum - A Neolithic Village

The Banpo Village is displayed in two parts. First is the excavation pits of the original site of the village and second is a reconstruction of how archaeologists believe the village may have looked. Being 6000 years old there is not much left of the site or concrete information about how society functioned beyond guesses. There are many artifacts displayed from the period. If you are interested in the Neolithic period of Chinese history then you will love this place. The site is located about 15 km east of Xian city centre and can be easily combined with a trip to the terracotta warriors. Banpo is also easily reached by taxi from the city however getting back can be a mission if you decide to go solo. Click on an image to enlarge

Beilin Forest of Stone Tablets Museum

Located at the East end of the Shuyuan art street, this is the place for those with an interest in Chinese Calligraphy and ancient texts. The museum itself has been home to many tablets for a millenium and contains thousands of classic texts engraved on huge stones. Beilin is much bigger than you would expect and is presented in traditional court yard style which adds to the overall feel. To really get the maximum benefit it is suggested to take a guide if you have difficulty reading Chinese characters.

Entrance fee is 30 rmb.
