What To Do In Shanghai Travel Holidays
Shanghai is one of China's most bustling and vibrant cities. It is the economic hub of the country and has long had a reputation for being one of the cities that has been most open to foreign influence. The result is a city that is distinctly Chinese, but with a romantic dash of past cultural influences. Shanghai travel leaves visitors with many great experiences tucked into their memories. Typically people start their China travel with Shanghai tours or Shanghai Xian trips
One of the best things about Shanghai tours is the energy of the city and a fascinating way to get to experience the city is to get lost and wander around the streets taking in the street sellers, dress makers, dumpling shops and other exotic sites in this mercurial city.
Shanghai is a city that is easy to walk around and Fuxing Park should be one of the first destinations you point your feet in. The park is in the middle of the old French Concession and you can see a lot of Shanghai life taking place under the shady sycamore trees. There are elderly women doing tai chi, men strolling with their smoking pipes and their caged birds, young Shanghai couples courting and often Chinese opera being blasted from the lungs of old ladies.
A must see for every visitor when they tour Shanghai is the Circus. Every night there is a presentation of the most incredible feats of acrobatics from gymnasts and acrobats that have trained for years to be able to show off their contortionist skills.
The Huxing Ting Tea House is a must visit as a wonderful introduction to the art of Chinese tea drinking. It is quite touristy, but it is housed in a quaint 18th century wooden building, which is said to be the inspiration for the famous willow china crockery. The house is set on a gorgeous little pond filled with carp and just around the corner is the lovely and tranquil Yu Yuan Gardens. The gardens are a restored Ming Dynasty garden, which is very pleasant to wander around and imagine that you are back in ancient China.
When you tour Shanghai you will notice right near the garden and tea house is a bazaar of market stalls and shops where you can shop until you drop buying silk pajamas, slippers, chop sticks and so on. Another place to get your shopping fix is at Taikang Road where you can wander around and find traditional Chinese clothing and jewelry amongst delicious street food.
One of the most important temples in the city is the Jade Buddha Temple. The main feature of the temple are the ornate carvings of Buddha done in a massive slab of jade that came from Burma in the late 19th century.
One of the most famous landmarks of Shanghai is the Bund. This is along the river front and there are a number of things to see and do there. The old Peace Hotel, which is a restored art deco building, was the center of chic in the 1930s when the world's most glamorous people came to live it up. You can take in the old ball room and other highlights of the hotel. Another option is to take a cruise along the river leaving from the Bund and then visit the Pearl Tower to get a bird's eye view over the city center.
